Where are the jobs
Hi all,
So I am in Durham, NC where according to most of the people I am talking to the recession has not hit here. My question is then why can't I seem to find a job or a place that is hiring that is not McD's? I now have 2 masters degrees and one would think that it would not be very hard to get a job, but that is not true.

I have now started volunteering with anyone and any organization that might help me get a job. I am applying to jobs all over the country, but no word on most jobs! what the heck. I have been told that I am very over qualified or I do not have enough work experience. So what the heck am I suppose to do??? More grad school is looking like a good option, but that is not what I want or need to do.

Some people have told me that it takes about 6 months to a year to get a good job right out of school, but what is the time line when NO ONE is hiring?

I forgot to mention something else. Go back to the school you got your degree from, maybe even just online. Some schools for students and alunmai have job placement centers and sometimes certain places will hire you based on that school alone. Not sure if it is still true, but that is Why Canisius was known as such a good school in some fields (not mine) because if went into Certain fields Canisius grads higher Canisius grads so that is something to think about.

Well having two Masters is great and all but are they related and what field is it in. I don't know what field you are in but for some the way you get a job is to get an internship when in school and then you can get hired that way. Volunteering is a good way to get work experance in your field. Maybe for some cash do like in American Beauty and just walk into a McDonalds and say you want a Job that has no responsiblty or some place just to make some money on the side. Then once you have some work experance maybe that place will hire you or you can put that on a resume. One other thing to look into is if you have other places you have worked there is a service that calls those places posing as an employer. It is possible you are getting bad referances.

I'm from Durham, NC and I moved up here to Buffalo because I had trouble getting computer jobs down there (I tend to do things backwards)

Contrary to popular opinion up here, the streets of North Carolina are not paved with gold, and I've had friends down there who've gone through patches of unemployment (some who've even been highly paid computer professionals). In general I'd hate to be in Charlotte, but since the financial meltdown I'd especially hate to be there (Wachovia's based there, etc).

Tell me what kinds of things your degrees are in. I'm not exactly an influence peddler or that well connected, but there's a slim chance I might know someone in your field who I could refer you to.

Best of luck job hunting. I have been without work for two weeks now and it is driving me mad. Hope you write a journal soon telling us about your sweet new job.
